Coastal Pharmacy & Wellness was built on a simple idea: healthcare works best when it’s personal, local, and rooted in genuine relationships. What began as a transition of care has grown into a pharmacy and wellness destination shaped by experience, resilience, and a deep commitment to our community.
In August of 2015, the seeds of Coastal Pharmacy & Wellness were planted.
Apothecary by Design made the decision to focus exclusively on specialty pharmacy services and sell its compounding pharmacy and nutritional supplement store. Rather than see that chapter end, Cassi Brooks—then Operations Manager at ABD—and Joe Lorello, pharmacist and founding partner of ABD, stepped forward to carry it on.
Their goal was simple but meaningful:
keep the team intact, preserve local ownership, and continue serving the community without interruption.
On February 29, 2016, Coastal Pharmacy & Wellness officially opened its doors at 84 Marginal Way in Portland.
In January of 2018, Coastal moved just two blocks down the street—though the effort felt much larger than the distance.
Over one long New Year’s weekend, our team relocated thousands of products, extensive IT systems, and an entire compounding lab. We reopened bright and early on January 2nd at 29 Marginal Way.
The new space brought:
- Better parking
- A more open, welcoming store
- Room to grow and expand our services
Most importantly, it reflected our belief that the pharmacy experience should feel approachable, calm, and human.
Between 2019 and 2024, Coastal experienced several leadership evolutions that strengthened our foundation and sharpened our vision.
Each chapter brought new perspectives, new ideas, and new energy. We’re grateful for the people who helped shape who we are today—and for the team that continues to move us forward with intention and heart.
Like everyone, we faced unprecedented challenges when COVID arrived. So much so that we wanted the word unprecedented struck from our lexicon.
The road wasn’t easy—but thanks to an extraordinary team and a shared sense of purpose, we adapted quickly and continued serving our patients without missing a beat. That period reinforced what we already believed: our people are our greatest strength.
From 2022 through 2025, we underwent two pharmacy management system upgrades—only one by choice.
Through every challenge, our staff handled change with uncommon skill, patience, and grace. We emerged stronger, more efficient, and even more confident in our ability to evolve without losing what matters most.
